qathet ART believes in the essential role of the arts, screen, cultural and creative sectors in contributing to the transformational change for a more environmentally sustainable region.
We work directly with individuals, organizations and artist groups engaged across cultural and sustainability sectors to harness the role of culture in achieving this change. Through year-round work and one-off projects, we support artistic practices that address innovation, sustainability and climate change.
qathet ART is committed to improving the quality of life of all people by supporting diverse and accessible artistic activities. The qathet Art Council was established in 2007 and is a non-profit registered BC Society with a volunteer Board of Directors representing a cross section of the community. The organization started the qathet Art Centre in 2018 with a focus on contemporary new media. The qathet Art Centre is located on the traditional territory of the Tla’amin Nation above the Powell River Public Library in a central accessible location (with elevator). The centre offers multidisciplinary programming which is at the core of all activities, directing workshop themes, projects, artist talks, school tours and community outreach.
qathet ART’s priority work for 2022/23 are:
- finalizing a name change in alignment with Tla’amin Nation request to remove reference and legacy of Israel Powell (Powell River Council for Arts and Culture)
- supporting youth through arts programming
- bringing awareness to sustainability and environmental impacts in the arts sector
qathet ART (qA) provides opportunities for the importance of artists as purveyor of critical comment and inspiration within the cultural community. The organization aims to confront habitual behaviour and push for experimentation, change, new growth and ideas. Currently qA has prioritized work needed to confront our colonial past and encourage diverse modes of expression.
