Free Form Curves
March 11, 2023
11am – 2pm
This class will be an introduction into free hand cutting and piecing of curves. Simple use of the rotary cutter with no templates or rulers will free you to do abstract piecing. By the end of class you will be able to put the skills to use for placemats, table runners, your quilt borders, and be able to make small abstract quilt blocks for a larger project or upscaling clothing.
Build your sewing machine skills with free form curves. Let us know if you need to reserve a sewing machine for the workshop.
Fabric Supplies:
- 4 – 12”X12“ contrasting colour cottons
- 4 – 6”X 20” rectangles in contrasting prints or solids will be used for a second technique.
- These can be shirtings , chambray, thrifted sheeting, or table linens.
- Quilter’s cottons or batiks, these are ideal but expensive.
- Some fabric will be available.
Equipment:
- Portable sewing machine – bring your own if you can
- Several filled bobbins, and a spool of neutral coloured thread
- Hand tools: Seam ripper, small fabric scissors for snipping threads, fabric scissors for cutting strips of fabric, straight pins
- Rotary mats will be provided, but bring your own rotary cutter if you have one
- There is no need for plexiglass rulers, but we will have some for squaring your final project
Additional fabric and a limited number of hand tools will be available for sharing.
Bring a camera or phone to take photos, to document samples for references for future use.
All Sewing Squad Saturday workshops encourage recycling, upcycling with garage sale or thrift shop purchases. Look through your own closets first and then ask friends and family. It is best to work with cottons, or linens. Men’s shirts are excellent to deconstruct. Heavy denim, or fabrics with a pile or nap are not suitable. Lightweight or sheer polyesters and stretchy knits are not suitable for this project.
All levels of sewers or sewists are welcome!
