old masters & experimental oil techniques

Kerensa Haynes adaptive teaching style supports each artist one-on-one and their expressive painting style while benefiting from collaborative group dynamics. This class is for beginners to advance artists looking to start a practice or invigorate their artistic practice.
Each class is 2 hours. The first portion of the class will focus on oil techniques. Technical aspects include old masters techniques, different paint stroke techniques and colour mixing. One painting will be worked on over the course to explore this specific style with a still life painting. The second hour of class will focus on experimentation of surface, subject, and bringing play, flow, and discovery.
Let’s paint! Wear clothes for experimentation of the basics and beyond.
Please bring:
If you have any concerns about purchasing new supplies, bring them to the first class. Supplies can meet any budget.
- Images – Students can bring their own images – portrait, still life and landscape or you can choose from a selection provided.
- Canvas –
- One 11×14 to 16×20 primed canvas to work on over the 6 weeks.
- And one canvas for experimentation each week 11×14 or smaller.
- Oil Paints – a minimum of:
- 1 black,
- 1 white,
- raw umber,
- burnt sienna,
- yellow ochre,
- 2 different blues,
- red,
- yellow in a minimum of a 12ml tube
- Brushes – a variety of brushes in varying sizes of your choice. They can be acrylic brushes – Filbert, flat, angled, round, a fan and some very small 0, 00, 1 for detailed work. – 2 large, 2 medium, 2 small and 2 extra small
- Medium –
- small jar of GAMBLIN – Gamsol – odourless mineral spirit,
- small jar of linseed oil,
- Solvent not required – If you bring it bring a small jar with a lid.
