Sandra Ritter

Like most artists, Sandra has always loved to draw, but until 1979, her busy dance career left little time for art. That changed when she moved to Victoria from California, and was so inspired by the wild beauty of BC that she eventually retired to focus on her painting. Although best known for her seascapes and coastal landscapes, she also paints a variety of other subjects, in oils, watercolours, and acrylics. She often explores less traditional treatments in mixed media and richly textured metallics. Whether highly detailed, or slightly abstract, it is the effective use of light and shadow that expresses the mood in each of her paintings . Before leaving Victoria for Powell River, Sandra worked on several major exhibits at the Royal BC Museum, and as the sole artist on one. She also created the submarine-like entrance of the Shaw Ocean Adventure Centre in Sidney, as well as murals at Commonwealth Place and Fisherman’s Wharf. In 2018 she took a few years off from her painting to write and publish her memoir, LEAPING INTO THE DARK. When she’s not painting or writing, she plays the harp–it keeps her sane.
