Call to Artists: Powell River Curling Club Mural

The Project:  Malaspina Art Society and qathet Art Council are assisting the Powell River Curling Club to find an artist to complete an art installation for their newly renovated building at 5750 Crown Avenue in Cranberry.  Artists of all genres are invited to submit original design for an enhancement to the plaster coated, cement block wall on the parking lot side of the building.

Wall dimensions: 20′ height x 176′ length

Consideration will be given to all mediums including but not limited to a painted mural(s), metal installation, carving and or wood application, mosaic, and banners.  Design may be for the full wall or any portion.  The total budget for all artist(s) fees and expenses related to this project is maximum $8000 including appropriate taxes.  

* This fee includes (but is not limited to): artist fees, technical consultation, travel to the site and project meetings, purchase of relevant materials, engineering fees, fabrication and artwork installation (including delivery to the site), assistants fees, insurance and/or permit fees as required by the City of Powell River.  

Note PR Curling Club will be responsible for cleaning and prepping the site for installation.

The PR Curling Club reserves the right to reject any and all submissions or choose multiple artists to provide segments of the complete project.

qathet ART has a set of scaffolding available for the project.

As this project is being funded by a grant, ideally the installation will happen between August and September of 2023. 

DEADLINE for proposals: June 30, 2023

Submissions:

  • Are inspired by one of the themes – curling, community OR place
  • Foster community pride
  • Strive to counteract graffiti and vandalism
  • Contribute to a sense of identity for PR Curling Club members
  • Preference will be given to local resident artists 

Decisions of final artwork will be selected by a team assembled by the PR Curling Club Board of Directors and will include 2 community members.

The successful artwork will fulfill the eligibility and design by:

  • Artistic excellence
  • Appropriateness of content relative to the space and theme
  • Quality and clarity of presentation

  • Artists biography/resume including images of previous work/portfolio of relevant experience
  • Design concept in as much detail as possible and understandable to non-artists
  • Stand alone image of the design/concept on the wall
